Updates from the NEMBC
We had a fantastic time at the NEMBC Conference!
We’re thrilled by the overwhelmingly positive feedback from those who attended our recent conference, highlighting the valuable workshops, networking opportunities, and the vibrant Gala Dinner!
Please enjoy the photos throughout this newsletter, and again, congratulations to all our nominees and award winners!
Acknowledging the AGM Outcome and Our Path Forward
We were certainly disappointed by the outcome at our recent AGM, particularly that the proposed constitutional changes, which would have extended voting rights to program members, were not passed.
Rest assured, we are diligently working behind the scenes to address the issues that arose.
We are committed to strengthening our governance and ensuring all members have a fair opportunity to vote.
In addition to ensuring the NEMBC’s legal compliance by transitioning from an association to a company limited by guarantee, the proposed constitutional changes are about ensuring your voices are represented, even if you weren’t able to attend the AGM.
Recognising the strong desire for all members to have their say and cast their vote, we are not giving up on this important initiative.
We’ve listened to your feedback and will be holding the vote again electronically in the coming months, once our new platform is ready, to ensure every station has the opportunity to cast their vote and be heard.
Our goal is to ensure that all program members, as well as stations, will have the opportunity to vote at the 2026 AGM and beyond.

An exciting visit to 3CR!
Today, the NEMBC team visited 3CR in Fitzroy (VIC) to personally present the two awards they won at the 2025 NEMBC Awards, as they were unable to attend the awards night.
It was a great opportunity to meet their team and tour their vibrant studios!
The NEMBC honours and recognises the award winners and nominees from 3CR for the amazing work they do as broadcasters.

Celebrating 25 Years of 2MFM at Their Inaugural Symposium
Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the first-ever 2MFM Symposium, held in Chester Hill, NSW, to celebrate the station’s 25 years on air. It was an inspiring event, highlighting the incredible impact of community radio band 2MFM’s dedication to multicultural broadcasting.
The station was rightly proud of its many awards and nominations from the recent NEMBC Gala and Awards Night at Crowne Plaza Melbourne, a testament to their hard work and commitment to diverse voices.
Alongside Pradeep Timalsina (NEMBC Board Director), we observed some fantastic breakout sessions led by 2MFM members, covering crucial topics like youth broadcasting, multilingual services, digital innovation, and more.
It was a powerful reminder of what community radio can achieve when it gives people a platform to share their stories and connect.
Huge congratulations to 2MFM on this milestone and here’s to many more years of amplifying multicultural voices.

Radio and You – Sector Impact Survey
Think Impact and Compass Polling are working together to better understand the impact of ethnic and multicultural radio, as well as several other sectors of community radio.
To help them do that, they have designed a very short survey. The purpose of this work is to support additional funding requests from community radio.
We are hoping for as many responses as possible. The more responses we get, the stronger the results will be.
We are interested in responses from listeners, volunteers, employees and advertisers/sponsors.
All responses are completely anonymous.
The findings will be included in a public report to help shape the future of radio.

The Harms of Vaping – Distribution campaign
The NEMBC has partnered with the Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network Australia (MYAN) to distribute ready-to-air 60-second grabs for the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care on The Harms of Vaping in the following nine languages: Assyrian, Bahasa, Bengali, Hindi, Japanese, Malay, Swahili, Tagalog, and Tamil.
The NEMBC is managing the distribution to community radio for four weeks, starting on 12 May 2025, across six radio stations in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory.
The script included in the grabs is as follows:
“Did you know vaping isn’t as harmless as it seems? People who vape may be exposed to chemicals that can damage their lungs, harm brain development and impact mood, memory, and even sleep. Even when it’s not mentioned on the label, nicotine is present in many vapes, which can cause addiction and withdrawal symptoms.
Quitting supports your health, helps the environment and saves money – and there is support available to help. If you or someone you know is considering quitting – they don’t have to do it alone. Download the free My QuitBuddy App or call Quitline on 13 7848. You can also speak with a GP or trusted healthcare professional or find resources in different languages on health.gov.au/vaping. Quitting can be challenging, and it’s okay if it takes a few tries!”
The in-language grabs were produced by MYAN.
